Olympic Games and the NHS

It has been reported that the NHS will be celebrated at the opening of the Olympic games with hundreds of nurses taking part. Clearly I am out of step with the "Big Society" in that I think the best celebration of the NHS is that nurses continue to work full time in the vacation of their choice. Here they can use their talents, training or empathy to care for their patients. This caring profession has little in common with the acalades of the spot light and tinsle but more with the knowledge of a job well done for patients. When is this country going to get a grip on reality?

The Romans held games to take the populations mind off of reality, we are going the same way!

Are the Olympics going to take over from the hospital nursing work station in taking nurses away from their real tasks?

IT Departments

IT departments in my experience have a strange view of the world as far as their “customers” are concerned.

For some years they have operated as sole arbitrators of their particular brand of wizardry which they regard as theirs alone.

Consequently a cult of black art has developed which seems to exclude their customers at all costs.

We are now into a 2nd generation of IT cultists who still seem to regard their customers as a lower form of life who rather tend to get in the way of a real days play.

Whilst IT is a vital part of modern life its practitioners generally
need to develop better customer skills.

At a time when the united efforts of Scotland and England should be focused on addressing the economic situations of both countries the personal ambitions of one man now seem to be taking centre stage.

For what I believe is the majority in both countries the Union is not broke.

So some Scots want full independence. In 1707 Scotland and England mutually signed the Act of Union with neither party being under duress to do so. Now one of the countries wants to change that union. Is it not right that the English should be given a say as to their preference?

As an Englishman I am proud to be united with Scotland, why change?

Perhaps it is sobering to think that in the 1860s a nation was torn apart by civil war due to succession!

Mr Salmond would be well advised to leave this United Kingdom well alone.

Greek Tragedy

In the south of France a Greek tragedy is playing out, at stake it seems is the finacial fate of the western world or worse? Powerful men stand helpless in the shadow of the Euro. Is this a turning point in world affairs that could have been avoided but for the ambitions of some polititions in Brussels. Dont we all remember the voices that said the Greeks did not meet the criterian for entry to the Euro? Power politics overcame those arguments! Now many ships of State are dead in the water, can it be that the band on deck is playing "Nearer my God to thee" or perhaps that was just in the film "A night to remember. There is one thing for sure the water for us all in the coming months is going to be very very cold and the only places in the life boats are taken by bankers!

Now that parliament is in recess for the summer the politicking on phone hacking may reduce. However investigations continue maybe involving other newspaper groups. Claim and counter claim will continue to be heard.

Today is an important day for us all as members of the Euro Zone meet to address possible Greek financial default. This in my opinion is as a direct result of some politicians ambitions for European political union whilst ignoring financial realities. This story will have profound effects on us all and phone hacking will be seen as a little local difficulty.

Teflon people - sad loss of a public servant & outrageous behaviour!

Today I have watched some hours of the principles involved in the phone hacking scandal being interviewed by the DCMS Select Committee. Most come across as the Teflon people who portray themselves as innocent victims of some as yet unidentified employees who they are ultimately responsible for as leaders of their organisations.

Ex- Commissioner Yates in contrast will be a great loss to the Police service and our security will suffer as a consequence! On this point I hope I am wrong?

The actions of the protester however was outrageous and he should feel the full force of our legal system in that he showed complete contempt for this important democratic process. - Shame on him!

I repeat the posting made on 15/9/2007 below because not much has changed. The lampstandard has been renewed, some of the road has been patched up but the gutters remain clogged with weeds, dirt and rubbish but only in some areas of this small town - what is going on. This council must feel street cleaning is important because they list it twice in their booklet on services they provide ?????????

Monty Python or Breach of contract?

Once upon a time there was a small coastal town in SW England dependant on the holiday industry where image and small business was important. The administration of the County was divided into three tiers, from the bottom up -Town - District - County.

A bid for a unified authority was overturned by the majority of those electors who bothered to vote.
One of these authorities decided to sell off a large town car park for housing, consequently more cars use street parking. Permit parking is now being considered in residential areas due to lack of or under utalised car parks.

In order to save the contractor money most street cleaning was mechanised but of course there were many gutters that could not be cleared of dust by machine because of parked cars. Nature abhoring a vacuum moved in with grass and weeds which then competed with any Britain in Bloom competition. One resident cleaned his own gutters but was repremanted by a contractor of one of authorities as he was not trained and there was a risk under H&S law as to where the dirt was deposited.
Neglect, lack of interest, no supervision all this despite being paid!!!!

Now these authorities are planning the future use of valuable areas within the small towns boundary - this story continues.

Town & District councellors become independants but felt the need to form alliances.
Some Town Councillors confused the effective managing of a valuable public recreation ground with the sponsorship of a football club.

Gardening - no, standard of road mtce!!!!!

In the meantime residents continue pay their council taxes

I hear this morning that TA soldiers could get a pension thus reducing any potential savings. Whilst I am confident that TA soldiers are competent to reinforce regular soldiers I am less than confident that part of the civilian work force should be depended upon to project power for this country.

Once again the leaders of all religious faiths have failed to remind us all through modern media of the error of forgetting the lessons of the past. This missed opportunity is left to all the usual groups to platform their own innocence in this particular affair and highlight the errors of others. Lets hope the security services are keeping their eye on ALL the parties involved and have put our country at real risk.

How these affairs will play out, will in my opinion, set the scene on whether this disunited kingdom will be able maintain its moral position in the family of nations.

Next year London hosts the Olympic Games again putting the city in the limelight of the worlds media. Lets hope all involved do not take their eye off the security ball.

I have just heard the 39 year old Danny Alexander talking on the Goverments ideas of choice in public services. The Rt Honorable Mr Alexandra was educated in a comprehensive school in Fort William Scotland. Perhaps he has extensive experience and expertise in the practical choices available to British people but the way he tried to convey these ideas in his interview with 68 year old grammar school educated John Humphys did not convince me, I cant speak for Mr Humphys ? He did not in my oppinion seemed to have been very well briefed on the PMs ideas or is it a case of they are still looking for suggestions.

After years in opposition I would have expected both parties now in Government to be in a postion to show the public the way and not keep asking for directions - maybe time to hire a TomTom!

Fish and chips were once wrapped in newspaper giving the product a valued second use. This is now regarded as a health issue which with recent events perhaps highlights other aspects of the media industry.

Increasingly it seems to be recognised that it is inappropriate and damaging for any media magnet to choose the colour of future governments anywhere in the democratic world.

However no doubt this will continue because money talks!

I listened to, "irony on irony" (the "hacked no doubt without premission) Sky News recording of Rebeka Brook addressing the NOTW journalists. No doubt she was under pressure but her inarticulate ramblings made me wonder what attributes had been recognised by others for her to qualify as a newspaper editor and now Chief Executive of News International. Her promises to "do her best" to find the staff other jobs must have insulted the ears of those who now find themselves unemployed. No doubt in the next few days she will, having absorbed the flack that could justifable have been aimed at bigger targets, she will be discarded with the same disregard. How then will she earn a living? The answer will be interesting reading in the redtops in the years ahead. We have not heard the last of the "Witch of Wapping" or will she be made Baroness Wapping for services rendered?

A seaside tale.

Image the scene - a beach somewhere in England.

After a warm sunny day the sand is warm and dry and a number of sandcastles stand boldly enjoying their prime positions in the sun with their paper flages fluttering gaily in the increasing onshore wind.

However the tide has now turned and like a tide of public opinion the waves are advancing menacingly up the beach towards the sand castles.

This is not the longest day - these days are yet to come for many in this small seaside town.

No today is Friday 8th July 2011.

In its advance the tide has already destroyed one red topped castle which is now being merged into the greater expanse of sand along with its many pebbles and dependant hard working sand flies.

Nearby a tall red headed child has been ordered by her family to lie down in front of the families larger castle to try to defend its outer wall against the rushing waves. Right along the beach families are burying dirty nappies in order not to offend future visitors. Consequently bucket and spade sales are doing very well.

Like characters from " Alice in Wonderland" some peple have been buries up to their necks in the sand. They are all clearly aware of the incoming tide but continue to sing with gusto and in unison "Oh we do like to be beside the seaside" Around their necks are notices that seem to read:

DCMS, OFCOM, MP, SKY, and THE CITY. The city person seems to have been badly burnt some days earlier! A Lord from Weston-Super-Mare was expected but he was deatined a long time ago.

A limp piece of sea weed rolls gently back and forth on the edge of the sea gently sighing to itself - it to has a notice that reads PCC.

Off to one side a Punch and Judy show is in full swing watched by a group of eager children. The three main puppets hit one another and shout in high pitched voices " Thats the way to do it!" to the delight of the children who know its only a show.

Up on the seafront a PCSO hurries along muttering to herself "Its wasnt me Guv". Nearby a small group of her colleagues are checking their shoes carefully for sand whilst the majority of other officers carry on their duties despite the sand blowing in their eyes and the ridicules of the drunks in the nearby pub carpark.

As the sun settles on the horizon a pensioner in the nearby park watches the ducks settling into their new house. From the open window of a nearby guest house a clocks westmister chime strikes the hour and reminds him of the book he is reading by Ernest Hemingway called " For whom the bell tolls".

Just then the increasing wind drags a discarded newspaper through a pile of dog dirt and then wraps it firmly around the old mans trousers leaving a disgusting deposit on the military crease. So engrossed is he in its removal he does not notice the group of teenagers walking past chatting on their mobiles and laughing at his predicament. After a couple of minutes some of the crap is removed and he gets up and heads home muttering "It must be a sign of the times"

So the PM seems to have got it at last. He has finally come on television announcing what the voters seemed to have grasped days or weeks ago.

A PM by definition must be leader of public oppinion not just a follower stating the b....... obvious!

Like an eagle flying backwards he does not appear to know where he is going but can see clearly where he has been!

He now has an opportunity to get ahead of the game, lead by example rather than trying to gain credit by just admitting past mistakes and ensure that public and private oraganisations of all descriptions are reminded of their moral as well as legal responsibilities.

Unless he does this in a few days the coalition particularly the LibDems will hang him out to dry!

NOTW and the MET

As I get older I find as I look around me that things that I thought were common sence seem like earth shattering relavations to others. Be it uncontrolled bank lending causing financial crashes to uncontrolled imigration causing social problems.

Soon there will be a general election and our polititions credibility will be stretched to the limit with lies, promises and utter crap just to get their self interested butts into a seat. Of course there may be some who have the best interests of the country at heart but they will soon buckle under the pressures of PC pressure groups or party whips. A very few will have the courage to speak out never to be heard of again. A tradegy but true!

After so long I thought it was time for a blog and what better than to report on frog status. Well 25/2/2010 and still no sign of our friends who in other years have been mating for some time by now. But its been and still is an awful winter.
On the news a couple who starved her daughter aged 7 to death have just been aquitted of murder on grounds of diminished responsibility. The biological father blamed the social services!!!!!! I MUST BE GOING MAD.

Yesterday the 22nd January 2009 we had to take our Ben on his final ride to the vets after a very short illness. Our companion and faithful friend for just over 14 years it felt like a final betrayal although we knew and were told it was the best thing for him.

Now the house seems empty and now looking back I realise just how much I miss him as a friend and constant companion. He repaid all my moods with a nudge of his nose, he would sit for hours waiting for a left over sausage. In later months his hearing was failing and I would find him sitting looking at the door waiting for my return when I had already slipped in unheard. The tears are still too easy to flow - our family has lost an important member who's example will be hard for a mere human to follow.

Defender of the Faith

The leader of the established church has spoken out today and grabbed some headlines. His chosen subject that grabbed the headlines, not urging for greater private and public morality, not urging that 3rd world issues are addressed, not that world leaders work for peace or that spiritual leaders mainly Christian and Moslem work towards a greater understanding between these and other moral & religious systems.

No the suject was the wording of the future presumed Coronation of Charles the 2nd and whether he should be know as Defender of the Faith or Faiths.

Perhaps many of the worlds problems today stem from zelots of all faiths "Defending their Faiths" as they see it!

So what!, it is unlikely that the whizz kids , new on the block of this finacial balancing act will suffer. No it is the world wide pension funds and the small investors backing industry for the long haul who will suffer.
Again common sense has been turned on its head for short term gain.

I heard an ex-policeman say on the radio recently that the Police had lost the streets. Alternatively perhaps they have lost the air of mystery that many years surrounded their actual powers. Today many people know their rights without accepting or even understanding their social responsibilities. The time has come to hit the offenders hard. Recent killings of citizens trying to defend civilisation is a disgrace. We should all feel ashamed that we have allowed common sense to go out of the window and allow a generation a younge people to be experimented on by ignoring the sensible administration of commensarate retribution. What a gift has now been given to extreme polititions to exploit a situation of tension. Where are the arbitators of our old moral codes, the churches and schools are just the start in what is a long list hiding behind modern ideas and PC attitudes.

The news that many of the emergency water bowsers are being vandalised demonstrates how close to the edge our society is coming to breaking apart. We have a society where there appears there is now no assumption that we all have a responsibilty for ourselves, others or our country. At the same time I hear on the news that some religious leaders dont even speak the language of their adopted country. I do not in any way support the National Front but do support the idea that all UK citizens must be assumed to support the established way of life of Britain. Respect of its laws, cultures and religions are a prerequisite of those seeking to benefit from living here. Anyone breaking this trust must be dealt with without exception. Unless we stand by old established truths on which Britain was built the future holds a bleak prospect for us all.

Tomorrow is Fathers Day. Today on the radio I hear that the suggestion that fathers are named on babies birth certificates has been greeted in some quarters by the suggestion that the mothers may find this humilating. No doubt these mothers will be less humiliated when they accept tax payers money to help them support these children for many years!
Britain needs to get back to basics and "try to see the wood for the trees!!" The churches voice along with other organisations who should have a voice on these and other moral issues is deafening by their silence"

There has been a lot of discussion in our local paper about the importance of local democracy in relation to the issue over a bid for a unitary authority based on the Somerset County Council. Clearly democracy is a vital part of the British political system but it is only a "method" and not the "product" in the process of ensuring the majorities wishes are acted upon.
As an example:
To move a super tanker in the right direction a number of small but powerful tugs need to cooperate so that by complimenting their pulling power from their relative positions and directions the greater good is served - this has little to do with democracy even if some of their captains were elected. The electors however all benefit from the resultant oil delivery.

Tomtom One and Geocaching

The downloading of geocaches to my tomtom seems to have gone well after an initial problem which I believe was due to me not using the correct disconnecting procedure which caused the tomton to "freeze". A quick reset of about 6 secs solved the problem. I can now see the caches on the tomtom map view and I now need to try it on the road!

I am a bit disappointed that the cache names do not appear on the tomtom - any ideas.

Well its all hype isnt it?
Being interested in Geocaching and GPS technology I finally succombed to the advertising and Christmas sales and purchased (invested) in a "tomtom One" True to the advertising it worked straight out of the box and guided us meticuously home the 25 miles of road I must have travelled thousands of times before. The level of detail is excellent with small side roads being show together with their names/numbers details I did not have easy access to before as they are not shown on OS maps.
I now intend using the info. on http://www.tomtomfree.com/Install_POI.htm to try to install about 500 geocaches from my GSAK data base - here's hoping

Omega point is a term used by Pierre Teilhard de Chardin to describe the aim towards which consciousness evolves; he held that evolution was a process converging toward a final unity. According to Chardin and the Russian scholar and biologist Vladimir Vernadsky (The Geosphere [1924] and The Biosphere [1926]), the planet is in a transformative process, metamorphosing from the biosphere into the noosphere.
This term is also used by Tulane University professor of mathematics and physics Frank J. Tipler to describe a hypothetical cosmological scenario in the far future of the Universe. According to the omega point theory, as the Universe comes to an end in a Big Crunch, the computational capacity of the Universe is capable of increasing at a sufficient rate that this computation rate is accelerating exponentially faster than time runs out. In principle, a simulation run on this Universe-computer can thus continue forever in its own terms, even though the external Universe lasts only a finite time. This theory assumes that certain cosmological variables prove that the universe will eventually contract, and that there will be intelligent civilizations in existence at the appropriate time to exploit the computational capacity of such an environment.
Tipler identifies this asymptotic state of infinite information capacity with God. The implication of this theory for present-day humans is that this ultimate cosmic computer will essentially be able to resurrect everyone who has ever lived, by recreating all possible quantum brain states within the master simulation. This would manifest as a simulated reality, except without the necessity for physical bodies in "reality". From the perspective of the inhabitant, the Omega Point represents an infinite-duration afterlife, which could take any imaginable form due to its virtual nature.
Recent observations suggesting an accelerating universe mean that the Big Crunch, on which the theory was originally predicated, is now thought an unlikely scenario. However, Professor Tipler has recently amended his views to accommodate an accelerating universe if the acceleration results from a positive cosmological constant. He proposes baryon tunnelling as a means of propelling interstellar spacecraft. If the baryons in the universe were to be annihilated by this process, then this would force the Higgs field toward its absolute vacuum, cancelling the positive cosmological constant, stopping the acceleration, and allowing the universe to collapse into the omega point.

Well here we are well into February and the frogs are still at it in our pond. They first started mating on the 2nd of Feb. same date as last year. Why is this of interest to you, you may ask and a very good question that would be if you did.

The passage of time is a medium/anomoly we all experience and share. The pulse of time can be measured in various ways from the trickle of sand, the drip of water, the swing of a pedulum or the vibration of an atom. What we all sence is that we seem to be on a stream that moves forward from the past that we remember, to the present that we experience and the future that is unknown.

Is this direction from the past to the future via the present dependant on an expanding universe? If so if the expansions slows or reverses what would we then experience at that line known as the present that separates the past from the future as time runs backwards.

The tradegy that struck the Indian Oceon Community leaves me thinking what a strange position the human race now finds itself in as a result of technology.
On one hand we have the ability to be moved by the scenes of complete personal destruction that continue to fill our TV screens on a daily basis and demonstrate empathy with complete strangers of different creeds. On the other hand we can be completely ignorant of needs that are far closer to hand yet do not warrent the intrusive eye of the camera or microphone. Our ability to support our neighbours in whatever part of the world they live is an ongoing challenge we will be asked to address in the months and years to come.

Mountains that walk are a rarity, landslides happen quite often.

I have resisted the temptation to comment on the disgusting August riots in our capital city but would like to draw your attention to my blog dated 3^rd Feb 2008.

This country does seem to be well on that slippery slope to 3^rd world status. It may be that this decline can be halted, if so it is likely to be the first time in history!
