On the 100th anniverary of Britains declaration  of war on Germany Russia is carrying of military manoeuvres on its border with Ukrain, lets hope the ghosts of the past shout "Stop this madness now!"

  • 100 years ago - I didn't realise how relevant my request would be!
    Dear Ron,
I am contacting you as I am trying to find information to help me piece together part of the life of my late father Grantley Wiltshire. He was a telephone engineer in Taunton both pre and post WW2 and died in employment with the GPO in 1950. During WW2 he resumed service in the Royal Corps of Signals.
My mother Hilda Wiltshire was a telephone engineer in Taunton during WW2 and after my father died (I was 3 years old) she returned to the GPO working as a Clerical Officer in Telephone House Taunton. She left to take up other employment probably in the early 1980s.
I would like to communicate by email if possible my email is jim@thewiltshires.org
As well as my mother and father working for the GPO in Taunton my uncle, Ray Wiltshire, also worked for the GPO in Taunton.
The information I require is not from people who would have known my father, they are probably long gone now, but of working practice at the time of WW2 and just after. I can give you more details later but there are references in a letter from my father to my mother, during WW2, in which he makes oblique references to where he will be working in the lead up to D day. The references would mean that my mother would know where he was working – but the censor would not take issue with it. These oblique references are what I wish to clear up. A telephone engineer working in Taunton during the war or post war would recognise what they meant!
    Kind regards
    Jim Wiltshire
